Interpol African Regional Training Workshop on Bioterrorism
Date: 21 - 23 November, 2005
Location: Cape Town, South Africa
Participant(s): Interpol and police representatives from various African countries
Description: Interpol’s bio-terrorism prevention initiative is seeking to guide its 184 member countries toward improved awareness, preparedness and a clear understanding of the measures police agencies need to take to prevent bioterror attacks. Interpol will host regional training workshops with senior police officials that have operational and/or training responsibilities, as well as experts in the terrorism field to train them in the context of bio-terrorism prevention and first-response. South Africa will host the first of these workshops in November 2005, and others will follow in Singapore in March 2006 and Chile later in 2006.
Legislation Top
Below is a select list of laws in South Africa. As biosecurity is a relatively new and rapidly developing field, many countries have yet to devise or implement laws specific to biosecurity. Since biosecurity has much in common with national security, biosafety, bioterrorism, biological weapons, import / export of dual-use materials, and biodiversity, some countries may develop biosecurity legislation by adapting existing laws within these other areas. Therefore, biosecurity legislation and other laws that could potentially be used as background for biosecurity legislation are included here.
